Why Acclimation Is Not Optional for Wood Flooring Installation

When it comes to hardwood or engineered flooring, most people focus on color, texture, and finish. But behind every flawless floor is something far less glamorous — proper acclimation. It’s one of the most overlooked yet critical steps in ensuring your floors perform well for years to come.
At Simpson Built, we don’t just install floors — we build them to last. And it all starts with acclimation.
❓ What Is Flooring Acclimation?
Acclimation is the process of allowing your flooring materials — whether solid hardwood or engineered wood — to adjust to the temperature and humidity of the room in which they’ll be installed. Wood is a hygroscopic material, which means it expands and contracts based on its environment.
Skipping this step can result in:
Cupping (edges rise)
Crowning (center rises)
Gapping (spaces between boards)
Buckling (boards lift off the floor)
🕐 How Long Does Acclimation Take?
Most manufacturers recommend 5–7 days, but this can vary depending on:
The type of flooring (engineered vs. solid wood)
Site conditions
Local humidity and temperature levels
We always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines — no shortcuts, no guesswork.
🌡️ Conditions Must Be Controlled
Before and during acclimation, the job site must be:
Enclosed and weather-tight
Climate-controlled, with HVAC systems running
Within the flooring’s specified range of temperature (usually 60–80°F) and relative humidity (typically 35–55%)
Letting wood acclimate in a garage, unheated basement, or shipping crate doesn’t count — it must be in the actual room it will be installed in.
🔍 Our Process at Simpson Built
At Simpson Built, our commitment to quality starts before a single board is laid. Here’s how we handle acclimation:
On-site Inspection:
We verify that the HVAC is on, windows and doors are installed, and site conditions are stable.
Moisture Testing:
Using professional moisture meters, we test the subfloor and the wood flooring to ensure compatibility. We log and monitor this daily if needed.
Staggered Stacking:
Flooring is delivered and spread out with spacers to allow even airflow during acclimation.
Documentation:
We document all readings and timelines to ensure compliance with warranty and industry standards.
Manufacturer Compliance:
We strictly follow all product-specific instructions to maintain full warranty coverage for our clients.
🛠️ Why It Matters
Your floors are a long-term investment. Improper acclimation can lead to costly repairs, disputes with builders, and voided warranties. At Simpson Built, we stand behind every floor we install with a 3-Year Workmanship Warranty, and that starts with doing things the right way — even if it takes a few extra days.
👷♂️ For Builders, Designers & Contractors
If you’re working with us on a renovation or new build:
Schedule flooring after HVAC install and drywall completion
Avoid rushing install dates before climate conditions are ready
Trust the process — a few extra days for acclimation protects your reputation, your project, and your client
✅ In Summary
Acclimation isn’t a suggestion — it’s a requirement.
When it’s ignored, the risk of failure is high. When done right, it lays the foundation for a stunning, stable, and long-lasting floor.
